Elul 18: Ask

With our first breath
we ask
“What the hell
is happening
to me?”

In every way it is
the most natural,
most human thing
we do.

Without coaching,
without anxiety,
without concern for repercussions,
we wail, we exclaim,
we demand and answer.

If I could muster
one small part of this
instinctual fervor
to tell you what I need
I just might get it,
and life would continue
from there.

This poem is in a series written during Elul, the Jewish month of reflection and repentance leading up to the Jewish New Year and Day of Atonement. The project is inspired by Rabbi Phyllis Anna Somer, @imabima. More info on her blog Ima on (and off) the Bima.
