It Really Is That Simple—Two

Put your phone back in your pocket.
Smile at the pregnant woman and
Move your bag so she can sit down.
Take your headphones out and listen
To the girl in front of you tell her mother
About her class trip to the planetarium.
Call out “Rear Door Please!” for the quiet kid
About to miss his stop.
Say “excuse me,” step aside, move to the back,
And pray for the biker who runs the red light
To make it home safely
Despite his blatant disregard for traffic laws.
Give directions to the woman
Who is on her way to an interview
Who was brave enough to ask for help
Even though that guy next to her
Has no idea where she is going.
Press the button for your stop
And wave to the driver when you get off,
And check
To make sure
You didn’t drop any garbage on the way out.

  1. Wonderful! Perhaps we should all have this poem in our pockets each day, and we should take a few deep breaths and read it.

  2. Thank you! I agree and I needed this yesterday on my bus ride home so I wrote out what I should have done.
