The Future is Somewhere

Sitting at a bar
With old familiar friends
It occurs to me that the future
Is somewhere inside of us.
All the things we will one day do,
The people we will yet become,
Are nestled there, in the infinite spaces.

Like a silent shelf of snow on top of a mountain,
Or a hand poised to pull down on an apple,
The potential energy collected at this table
May very well change life as we know it
In another twenty years or so.
And somehow in that time,
We will still manage to be
Who we are.

Ask me about this again when I’m old,
Sitting at a bar
And realizing that the past
Is somewhere inside of us
Nestled there, in the infinite spaces.
I wonder if it will still surprise me then.
I wonder if I will even remember
All the possibilities.
